Bontex is a cellulose fiberboard used to add structure and support to leather goods without the weight and bulk of adding another heavy layer of leather. It is commonly laminated between the outer leather and lining, where it provides body while remaining hidden inside the finished project.
This is especially useful for handbags, totes, briefcases, clutches, cases, book covers, portfolios, and other projects that need a little help holding their shape. Use it to reinforce bag bodies, bottoms, gussets, flaps, dividers, or other areas where the leather alone is softer than you want.
With several thicknesses available, you can choose how much structure you want to add. Thinner Bontex works well when you want subtle reinforcement without making the project feel bulky, while the heavier thicknesses provide considerably more support for structured bags, bottoms, panels, and covers.
Bontex can be cut to the shape of your project and glued between layers during assembly. For best results, cut the stiffener slightly inside your seam or stitch line so you aren't unnecessarily building extra thickness into the edges of the project.
And don't overlook it at the pattern table. The firm, consistent sheet material also works well for making reusable patterns and templates when paper just isn't sturdy enough.

"It seems like it's just cardboard without a gloss surface. It's not going to return to shape if it's folded or creased. I don't think it's ideal for stiffening leather projects that need to have the ability to move around."

"I am new to leather working and don't know much about stiffening keather so I have tried every "budget" version of bag stiffener I could find that the Internet recommended: cheap suede remnants, cheap veg tan remnants, the veg tan split bundle, layering interfacing fabric, and even slide transparencies! All of them sucked in different ways, so I finally tried Bontex and it is well worth the money. Consistent thickness, very high stiffness for such a thin material, and super easy to glue! If you need to stiffen something and don't want a self adhesive stiffener then this is well worth the money. The . 02" seems to be the perfect ratio of thickness to strength."
