Tannning & Finishes
Tanning is the process that transforms raw animal hides into durable, usable leather by stabilizing the natural fibers and preventing decomposition. The tanning method plays a major role in how leather feels, bends, ages, accepts color, and performs in different applications. Understanding the differences between tanning methods will help you choose the right leather for your project.
Vegetable Tanning
Vegetable tanning is one of the oldest and most respected methods of making leather. Using natural tannins extracted from tree bark, wood, leaves, and other plant materials, this traditional process produces leather known for its strength, beauty, and ability to improve with age.
Historically, some of America's most respected vegetable-tanned leathers were produced using methods similar to those employed by the legendary Bona Allen Company of Buford, Georgia. Founded in 1873, Bona Allen became world-renowned for manufacturing premium saddles, harnesses, bridles, and other working leather goods. Their bark-tanned leathers earned a reputation for exceptional durability, consistent quality, and outstanding tooling characteristics—qualities that continue to influence premium vegetable-tanned leathers today.
Another name synonymous with premium vegetable-tanned leather is Hermann Oak Leather Company. Founded in 1881 in St. Louis, Missouri, Hermann Oak has spent well over a century producing some of the finest vegetable-tanned leather in the world. Their leather is still crafted using time-honored tanning methods that emphasize quality over speed, producing hides prized for their consistency, clean grain, and exceptional tooling characteristics.

Hermann Oak leather is a favorite among professional leatherworkers, saddle makers, holster makers, belt makers, and hobbyists alike because it tools cleanly, molds beautifully, dyes evenly, burnishes exceptionally well, and develops a rich, natural patina with years of use.
Vegetable-tanned leather is generally firmer than chrome-tanned leather and starts out in natural shades ranging from pale tan to light brown. One of its most desirable qualities is its ability to develop a rich patina—a deepening of color and character that occurs naturally through handling, sunlight, oils, and everyday use.
Because vegetable-tanned leather readily accepts moisture, it can be carved, stamped, tooled, molded, formed, and dyed with excellent results. It is the preferred choice for belts, holsters, sheaths, saddlery, notebook covers, wallets, cases, armor, and many other structured leather goods.
One of the reasons vegetable-tanned leather has remained popular for generations is that it allows the maker to leave a personal mark on every project. Whether you're carving intricate floral patterns, stamping a maker's mark, molding a holster, or hand-dyeing a custom belt, vegetable-tanned leather provides a level of versatility that few other materials can match. With proper care, it also develops a beautiful patina over the years, giving each finished piece a unique character that reflects its history and use.

Chrome-Tanned Leather
Chrome tanning was developed during the 19th century and revolutionized leather production by dramatically reducing tanning time. Instead of plant tannins, chromium salts are used to stabilize the leather fibers, producing leather that is softer, more flexible, and more resistant to water than traditional vegetable-tanned leather.
Chrome-tanned leather is available in an enormous variety of colors, textures, and finishes, making it the most common leather found in garments, handbags, footwear, upholstery, automotive interiors, luggage, and fashion accessories.
Because the fibers remain more flexible, chrome-tanned leather generally does not tool or carve well like vegetable-tanned leather. It excels in applications where softness, drape, and comfort are more important than rigidity or molding ability.
Oil Tanned Leather
Oil-tanned leather isn't actually tanned with oil. Instead, oils and waxes are heavily infused into the leather during finishing to create a supple, weather-resistant material with a rich pull-up effect.
These leathers are known for their rugged appearance, exceptional durability, and ability to hide scratches and wear through regular use. Oil-tanned leather is commonly used for boots, bags, aprons, tool rolls, work gear, outdoor equipment, and other projects where a broken-in look is part of the appeal.
Because of the heavy oil content, these leathers are generally not intended for tooling or carving.
Combination (Re-Tan) Tanned Leather
Some leathers combine multiple tanning methods to capture the best characteristics of each process. These are often referred to as combination tanned, re-tanned, or veg/chrome tanned leathers.
Typically, a hide is chrome tanned first for softness and durability, then re-tanned using vegetable tannins to add body, improve burnishing, and increase its ability to accept molding or finishing techniques. Many premium bag leathers, harness leathers, and work leathers use combination tanning because it balances flexibility with structure.
Pull-Up Leather
Pull-up refers to the visual effect created when oils and waxes move within the leather as it bends or stretches. Areas under tension become lighter in color, creating depth, contrast, and a naturally aged appearance.
Every scratch, fold, and bend contributes to the leather's evolving character, making pull-up leathers especially popular for bags, wallets, belts, boots, and rustic leather goods.
Leather Finishes
After tanning, most leathers receive some type of finish. A finish affects
not only the appearance of the leather but also how it feels, wears, and
responds to use.
Common finishes include:

Aniline:
Transparent dyes that allow the natural grain, scars, and character of
the hide to remain fully visible.

Semi-Aniline:
Similar to aniline but with a light protective coating for added
durability and stain resistance.

Pigmented:
An opaque color coating that provides excellent consistency, durability,
and resistance to fading.

Waxed:
Adds richness and protection, and often creates the popular pull-up
effect, where lighter tones appear when the leather is bent or stretched.

Glazed or Plated:
Produces a smooth surface with a subtle sheen by compressing the grain
under heat and pressure.

Nubuck:
The grain side is lightly buffed to create a soft, velvety texture while
retaining the strength of full-grain leather.

Suede:
Created by buffing the flesh side of the hide, producing a soft nap that
is popular for apparel, footwear, and accessories.
Patina
Patina is the gradual change in appearance that occurs as leather ages. Exposure to sunlight, natural oils from your hands, moisture, and everyday use slowly deepen the leather's color while adding richness and personality.
Vegetable-tanned leather develops the most dramatic patina, but many pull-up and waxed leathers also become more beautiful with age. Unlike synthetic materials that simply wear out, quality leather often becomes more attractive the longer it is used.
Natural Variation
Leather is a natural material, and no two hides are exactly alike. Grain patterns, wrinkles, healed scars, insect bites, stretch marks, brands, neck wrinkles, and slight color variations are all normal characteristics—not defects.
These natural markings are part of what makes genuine leather unique. Rather than diminishing its value, they tell the story of the animal and ensure that every finished project has its own distinctive character.
