Phenix 1886 Oil Tan Leather

Inspired by the rich history of southwest Missouri, Phenix 1886 Oil Tans feature a unique assortment of colors influenced by the natural landscape surrounding the historic Phenix community. These exceptional leather sides range from warm wood-toned browns to limestone-inspired grays, capturing the character and heritage of the region that helped shape Missouri's industrial history.

Produced as a rare collection of tannery sample leathers, these sides represent color variations originally developed alongside some of our most popular oil tan leathers. While the shades may not have been exact matches for production colors, the quality, character, and workability of the leather remain outstanding.

Each side features the rich feel and durability that oil tanned leather is known for, offering a comfortable hand that ranges from medium soft to medium firm depending on the specific hide. The natural oils provide flexibility and character while enhancing the leather's depth and appearance.

With weights ranging from 4–6 oz, Phenix 1886 Oil Tans are ideal for bags, backpacks, duffels, totes, cases, notebook covers, accessories, chaps, and a variety of other leathercraft projects. The combination of attractive colors, durable construction, and excellent workability makes these sides suitable for both hobbyists and professional makers.

Because these leathers originated as sample runs, color tones, temper, and finish characteristics may vary from side to side, making each piece unique. This variation provides makers with the opportunity to acquire premium oil tanned leather at an exceptional value while creating projects with distinctive character.

Whether you're crafting rugged everyday carry items, western-inspired goods, or custom leather accessories, Phenix 1886 Oil Tans offer beauty, versatility, and remarkable value in every side.

Great leather

"Loved my light tan 1886 side I purchased from Springfield. Great product. I reordered this leather in the darker brown and anxious to make knife sheaths with it. Great people to do business!"

Phoenix 1886

"Phoenix 1886 leather is a solid choice for tote bags. It offers a good mix of structure, workability, and long-term durability. For anyone building totes that need to look good, hold shape, and age well, it’s definitely a leather worth using."

Color is a little off in pictures

"This run is softer than I expected. . . it has a very soft hand IMO. Not what I was looking for, but the 5 star rating represents the overall quality, not the surprise. The picture on the store site shows the Sugarwood as a light tan, but this has a very slight green hue that makes it look more like a mustard. Having worked in graphic design for 20 years, I can tell you that, unless monitors are calibrated the same, no two will show a picture the same way. So totally not the store's fault. But I was a little disappointed at first. I wanted a light tan to round out my stock. However, I realized that when this color is used with other earth tones or jewel tones, it complements them nicely. In the pictures, the white is supposed to be a bright white. If you have a photo viewer that can adjust for color cast, you can see the actual color in the pictures. The second pix shows the sugarwood next to the other colors. Overall, I'm pleased with it."

Looks just like the picture

"Talk about holy cow! This ivy green side is amazing! The color perfectly matches the pictures on the site (on my monitor, anyway). It has a slight marble texture, and very few marks. This looks like a piece at rocky mountain I wanted, at 1/3 the price. Prettiest piece of the lot!"

Sugarwood: Great Leather, But Different Color

"Leather is soft-temper with a slightly velvety feel. Excellent drape for soft bags and jackets(not what I got it for, I'd LOVE this leather otherwise). The color is closer to. . um. . . a musty hay bale or dried/roasted wheat/oats? This has more of a yellow-olive tint than an orange-beige tint."
