Odd Lot Oil Tan Sides

Choose between Assorted Earth Tones and Black!

We have a little something for everyone in our selection of Odd Lot Oil Tan Sides! Whether you need a whole side or part of a side, with several buying options, we've got you covered. Great for beginners and old hands alike, these value-priced oil tans have become some of our best-selling leathers—and it's easy to see why.

No two batches are exactly alike, and that's part of the fun. Most pieces have a smooth grain, although some beautiful pebble grains occasionally make their way into the mix. Some are oilier than others, some are firmer, some have a strong pull-up, and others have a more subtle pull-up or distressed appearance. At these prices, occasional natural range markings, brands and other imperfections may be present, adding even more character to the leather.

With so much variety, the project possibilities are nearly endless. These oil tans are excellent for chaps, saddle strings, bags, totes, backpacks, satchels, aprons, journals, moccasins, linings, and just about anything else you'd normally reach for oil-tanned leather to make.

Options

$25 Option – Approximately 6–8 Sq. Ft.
A great choice for smaller projects, experimenting with oil tan leather, or adding some variety to your leather stash. Pieces will generally fall within the 4–6 oz. range and may occasionally be slightly heavier than the listed square footage.

$50 Option – Approximately 15–18 Sq. Ft.
Need more leather for bags, aprons, satchels, or other larger projects? These sides offer generous cutting area while maintaining the same variety of grain, pull-up, temper, and character found throughout the Odd Lot Oil Tan selection. Most will fall within the 4–6 oz. range and may occasionally run a little heavier.

2 for $75 – Approximately 26–34 Sq. Ft. Total
You'll receive two good-quality sides totaling approximately 26–34 square feet. The sides may be cowhide or Water Buffalo and will generally fall within the 4–6 oz. range and may occasionally run a little heavier.

You might get a 12 and 14 sq. ft. side, a 14 and 16, a 20 and 13, a 17 and 16... well, you get the picture. Individual side sizes will vary, but the pair will fall within the approximate total square footage range. Most have a smooth grain, although pebble grain may occasionally be included. Many feature a nice pull-up, while others may have a more distressed appearance.

Please Note: When possible, we try to keep both matching pairs and assorted pairs on hand for the 2-for-$75 option. If you have a preference, add a note to your order at checkout and your gatherer will do their best to accommodate your request. Preferences cannot be guaranteed. Also, like all natural leather, there could be brands, range marks, and other natural characteristics.

Odd Lot Oil Tan Sides are a great way to get plenty of useful, character-rich leather at a price that leaves more room in the budget for your next project—or maybe the one after that, too.

Leather is good, but one of them has a huge blemis

"Leather quality was good. . I thought. Until I opened up my second one, and there’s a 12x12 scar in the bend. They clearly couldn’t sell this leather, so they just threw it into this odd lot and hoped nobody would complain. They said “is there a catch? No!”. Well apparently the catch is that there’s a huge scar."

Love

"I’m extremely happy with my leather purchase! The leather is absolutely beautiful, feels high quality, and the colors are even better in person. I was honestly impressed with how much leather I received for the price. I’m using it to make handmade journal covers, and it’s exactly what I was hoping for as I start creating my products. Everything arrived in great condition, and I would definitely purchase from them again. Highly recommend!"

Odd Lot Oil Tan - Get what you pay for I guess

"I have ordered these inexpensive oil tans in the past and got lucky I guess - heavy pull up, pretty color. This time, not so much. They’re about $4/ft so the expectations can’t be too high. This side was dull, varied a lot in thickness and has very little pull up. Still a fan of Springfield but this one wasn’t great."

A great assortment of quality sides - excellent value.

"Ordered a total of 4 sides, and ended up receiving 2 dark and 2 medium toned sides with soft-medium temper. All of them look great and look forward to using them on a range of projects. Of course, your results may vary, but in my instance I am completely satisfied with what I received."

I ordered more!

"I was so happy with the odd lot oil tan sides I received that I ordered 4 more! The color grabbed me immediately then the quality. Perfect leather for the projects I have planned. I especially love the way this leather takes edge treatment. Just beautiful! If I had a choice in what color I would be sent I would choose coordinating colors but I honestly would not mind getting the same color. And talk about fast shipping! One day! Ordered Tuesday, delivered Wednesday! That doesn’t happen every time so I was pleasantly surprised. I ordered again very late in the day on Wednesday and the packages are being delivered Monday. Still very fast delivery !"

Short on sq ft

"I'm very happy with the oil tan leather that I received, very nice SB Foot, loved it. But it's only 24sq ft and I was generous with my measurements, add says 26-34 sq ft I believe. It was like a piece was left out."

Only purchase if you don't have a specific project requirement.

"Received 2 nice sides, 4–5-ounce, totaling about 22 sq ft. Dark and darker brown, medium to soft temper. I added as requested a note asking for light colored, firm leather. I would give the actual leather 5 stars but shipping took 2 weeks and my request were ignored so I think 3 stars is generous."

oil tan sides

"As always the product was as advertised and Just what i expected. It will work great for what i wanted plus a few extras. I have never had an issue with anything i have ordered great products all the time."

Beautiful

"I didn't realize the size of this. For the price. Freaking amazing. I thought i was getting a smallish piece to make an apron from but this is enough for multiple projects. Will definitely be buying here again"

Great pieces!

"I started out with SLC ordering these years ago. They have continued to be an excellent choice to bulk up my inventory of oil tan sides. Sometimes I will have brands on my side - which is perfectly useable leather for rustic projects. If you're looking for a pristine side with no range marks or character, look somewhere else probably. I've definitely received some perfect sides - SB FOOT for goodness' sake!! Overall, this is definitely worth the money if you are a leatherworker capable of working around a few spots here and there and recognize that these are from living breathing beings that lived lives outdoors where bugs and thorns existed. I will absolutely be buying more - these brands have been awesome! I don't know which ranch has the Rocking R, but it made an awesome bag."
