Hermann Oak A Grade

Hermann Oak A Grade Veg Tanned Sides

This is what Hermann Oak calls their A Grade, while not 100% perfect, this leather will have the least amount of surface defects/blemishes of all the tooling leather they produce. Of course, it has all the wonderful tooling and molding properties that you would expect from legendary Hermann Oak leather.

Since 1861, Hermann Oak has been tanning top-grain leather right here in Missouri. St. Louis-based, the company prides itself on its slow and careful tanning process (referred to as Press-Yard traditional Tanning). This is a time and labor-intensive process that produces dense, sturdy leather that holds its shape when molded. They have used this tanning process for over 100 years, always resulting in the consistent properties that Hermann Oak is known for… the finest, top-grain strap and tooling leather in the world.

In addition to buying by the square foot, now you have the option to save a few bucks and buy the whole side... or you have the option to save a few more bucks, and buy a whole roll (total of 4
sides of the same weight).

Fun fact: Hermann Oak supervisors grade all their leathers FOUR separate times! Their standards are regularly coordinated in group meetings, and the GRADING IS BASED SOLELY ON SURFACE IMPERFECTIONS LIKE SCARS AND BRANDS. The greatest emphasis is placed on the bend area (60%) followed by the shoulder area (25%) and the belly area (15%).

Not Grade A

"I ordered Grade A 3-4oz and Grade A 5-6oz. These were not Grade A. the 3-4oz had at least 50% with bends, scratches, and cuts. I contacted customer support and got no response. On top of that it took 10 days to recieve my leather. Not a happy leathercrafter!"

Herman Oak A Grade

"The quality of the leather was great, however the 3-4 oz was disappointing in the size. If my project would have been wider than 8” I wouldn’t have been able to use it. It might have been 1sq. Ft. If you measured down to the point. Very disappointed in the way it was cut!"

Great product! But your employees are your most phenomenal asset!

"Drove eight hours round trip from Oklahoma to pick up my needs and had an employee helping me all the way, he showed me all around and I met a lot of your employees. Never seen anything like it. I'm a customer for life. Now my one stop shop. FIVE STAR ALL THE WAY!!!! Richard Meadors, Oklahoma"

Works well with burning tool

"I came up with a way to sign my artwork by making circular cuts and using a burning tool to write my initials. I then sew it my fabric artwork. The leather works great."

"I appreciate you being so close and being handy to run and get things but your leather price has gotten out of control I could have bought that side for at least a $150 cheaper elsewhere but I needed it in a hurry called back a couple days later to buy a side of 13/15 skirting priced it to me for $360 in five minutes had a side coming for $265 all leather I’m talking about is Herman oak the price of Herman oak is about to force me to start buying from thoroughbred leather"
