Phenix 1886 Oil Tans

During the railroad boom of the late 1800s the Kansas City, Clinton, and Springfield Rail Co. forged their way through the wilderness between Ash Grove and Walnut Grove. During repeated blasting a deposit of high quality of limestone was discovered. A post office, general store, two-room school house, and dwellings, started appearing around 1886. The Missouri State Capitol now displays stone from the Phenix Marble Company and the Phenix area still is in production today in the quiet woods of Missouri. These sides will consist of an exceptionally rare selection of samples leather, tanned for us in tones from Midwest Missouri brown (wood) to limestone grays (quarry)! We asked for some tanneries to make some of our stock oil tans, like Ranch Hand, Tennessee Whiskey, and several others, but the colors just weren’t a perfect match, so we’re passing these on to you for practically what we paid for it! These sides are running between 19-24 sqft. with most being 4-5 oz. and some may be closer to 5-6 oz. This is beautiful leather, folks, at a mind-blowing bargain!

Great leather

"Loved my light tan 1886 side I purchased from Springfield. Great product. I reordered this leather in the darker brown and anxious to make knife sheaths with it. Great people to do business!"

Phoenix 1886

"Phoenix 1886 leather is a solid choice for tote bags. It offers a good mix of structure, workability, and long-term durability. For anyone building totes that need to look good, hold shape, and age well, it’s definitely a leather worth using."

Color is a little off in pictures

"This run is softer than I expected. . . it has a very soft hand IMO. Not what I was looking for, but the 5 star rating represents the overall quality, not the surprise. The picture on the store site shows the Sugarwood as a light tan, but this has a very slight green hue that makes it look more like a mustard. Having worked in graphic design for 20 years, I can tell you that, unless monitors are calibrated the same, no two will show a picture the same way. So totally not the store's fault. But I was a little disappointed at first. I wanted a light tan to round out my stock. However, I realized that when this color is used with other earth tones or jewel tones, it complements them nicely. In the pictures, the white is supposed to be a bright white. If you have a photo viewer that can adjust for color cast, you can see the actual color in the pictures. The second pix shows the sugarwood next to the other colors. Overall, I'm pleased with it."

Looks just like the picture

"Talk about holy cow! This ivy green side is amazing! The color perfectly matches the pictures on the site (on my monitor, anyway). It has a slight marble texture, and very few marks. This looks like a piece at rocky mountain I wanted, at 1/3 the price. Prettiest piece of the lot!"

Sugarwood: Great Leather, But Different Color

"Leather is soft-temper with a slightly velvety feel. Excellent drape for soft bags and jackets(not what I got it for, I'd LOVE this leather otherwise). The color is closer to. . um. . . a musty hay bale or dried/roasted wheat/oats? This has more of a yellow-olive tint than an orange-beige tint."
