Hermann Oak Brown

Hermann Oak Drum Dyed (aka Collar) leather has the superior quality we have come to expect from Hermann Oak.

This 100% vegetable tanned leather has been drum dyed and struck through with a rich, dark brown color, with a slight sheen. Plus, it's available in two grain styles: Smooth, which kinda speaks for itself, and Haircell, which features a slightly textured grain. Both ensure a professional, polished look for any project you use it for. Being fully veg tanned, it is stampable, toolable*, moldable, and burnishable. (*Carving with a swivel knife could prove difficult.)

Since 1881, Hermann Oak has been tanning top-grain leather right here in Missouri. St. Louis-based, the company prides itself on its slow and careful tanning process. A process that produces the finest top-grain stamping and tooling leather in the world. The Hermann Oak name has become synonymous with high quality!

A joy to work with

"I have bought this leather in a couple different weights and it’s really been amazing to work with! I’ve been able to make some truly amazing book covers, wallets and keychain tags."

Overpriced, Overhyped, Poor QC, Poor Yields

"After purchasing close to a dozen Hermann Oak sides over the last 5–6 years, I feel I’ve worked with a large enough sample to give an honest and informed review. My conclusion is simple: the leather is significantly overpriced, the quality control is virtually nonexistent, and the usable yield is the worst I’ve seen in the industry. My lowest yield was 25% on a $325 side — painful. For years I assumed the high price meant high quality, but once I started working with Wickett & Craig, Horween, and even mid‑tier Italian tanneries, the difference was shocking. I realized just how inconsistent and disappointing Hermann Oak really is. Hermann Oak does one thing well: they achieve a firm temper at relatively low weights. Unfortunately, that firmness comes at a cost. The surface is frequently riddled with cracks — not “fat wrinkles,” but actual cracks and splits, sometimes covering 50–75% of the hide. This isn’t a rare defect; it’s a recurring pattern. Even on the “good” sides, I still expect at least 30% waste due to structural issues. If I could reliably get a 65–70% yield, I’d continue buying it. But the reality is that the inconsistency is so severe that you simply can’t count on it. Meanwhile, nearly every other tannery I’ve worked with delivers 85%+ usable yield without the drama. There’s just no excuse for Hermann Oak’s level of variability at this price point. To be clear, this is not a criticism of the kind and helpful folks at Springfield Leather. But I do question how such expensive hides with obvious cracks and splits make it out the door. This review is simply my honest experience: Hermann Oak is overhyped, overpriced, and plagued by quality issues, and it has cost me a lot of money over the years. Hopefully this helps someone avoid learning that lesson the hard way."
