How can it be this cheap? Every veg tannery runs into the same problem: some hides make it all the way through the tanning process before grain or surface defects cause them to fall below the tannery’s normal grading standards. That is exactly what Hermann Oak Economy Plus is.
The leather itself is tanned using the same process as Hermann Oak’s higher grades, but expect scars, brands, grain damage, wrinkles, discoloration, or other surface defects that keep these sides from making the regular grade. Make no mistake—there is still a lot of good leather in these sides, and careful pattern placement can give you plenty of usable material for your money.
Hermann Oak has been vegetable tanning leather in St. Louis since 1881, and these Economy Plus sides give leatherworkers a more affordable way to work with genuine Hermann Oak veg tan. The firm temper makes it suitable for tooling, carving, stamping, molding, dyeing, and finishing, with project possibilities ranging from belts and wallets to holsters, sheaths, cases, tack, and other traditional veg-tan work.
Please Note: These sides are below Hermann Oak’s normal grading scale, and surface defects will be present. This is part of what makes the Economy Plus price possible. Quantities are limited and availability will vary.
