A little rough around the edges? Absolutely. Full of possibilities? That’s where you come in! If you’re the creative type who can work with a few quirks, this bundle offers plenty of leather for your dollar.

Each bundle contains 30–35 sq. ft. of assorted vegetable-tanned leather splits, produced right here in our shop when we thin down heavier Hermann Oak leather sides.

Before you dig in: These splits have no top grain or smooth grain surface. They’re rough on both sides, and some areas may be thin, loose-fibered, or prone to tearing. A little sorting, trimming, and creative cutting is part of the deal!

What is a leather split?

When we split a heavy leather side down to a thinner weight, the lower layer removed in that process is called a split. That leftover layer is what goes into these bundles.

Our goal when splitting is to get the top piece to the thickness we need. The split underneath comes along for the ride, so its thickness, texture, and firmness can vary considerably. Those quirks are also what keep the price friendly. If you’re willing to work around them, there’s a lot of potential in this pile!

What to expect in your bundle

  • Two rough sides, plenty of personality. Some areas may feel relatively smooth or compact, while others are coarse, fuzzy, or fibrous. Neither side has the smooth grain surface found on regular veg tan leather.
  • Thickness that likes to mix things up. Weights generally range from approximately 2–3 oz. to 7–8 oz., and a single piece can vary by several ounces. Expect an assortment rather than one consistent weight.
  • Edges with a mind of their own. These aren’t neatly cut panels. Pieces have irregular shapes and rough, uneven edges that may need trimming.
  • Some spots that won’t make the cut. Loose-fibered areas, sometimes called “flanky” spots, may stretch or tear easily and may need to be cut away. Not every portion of every piece will work for your project.
  • A mix of sizes. Most pieces are approximately 4–10 sq. ft., with occasional pieces as large as 15 sq. ft. or as small as 1–2 sq. ft. Every bundle has its own mix of sizes and thicknesses.

We include extra footage to help account for weaker areas and trimming waste. How much you can use will depend on your project’s size, shape, and thickness requirements. Think assorted cutting opportunities—not one big, uninterrupted panel.

What can you use it for?

Put your imagination to work! Suitable portions can be useful for lining, laminated layers, and stiffeners in belts, bags, clutches, and wallets. These splits are also handy for pattern testing and craft projects using paint, markers, or wood burning.

For makers who enjoy finding a use for an odd-shaped piece or turning leftovers into something clever, this bundle can be a budget-friendly way to keep the ideas flowing.

This is unfinished split leather. If your project requires a smooth grain surface, consistent thickness, or dependable strength throughout each piece, this bundle is not the right choice.

Please Note: No returns on these bundles. Not sure whether these splits are a good match for your next idea? Give us a call and talk with a Customer Service representative before purchasing—we’re happy to help you figure it out!

top shelf

"Very pleased when order came. It was much more leather than I expected. I thought the "Bundle" would be small scraps but it was two huge pieces . I was baffled by all the choices but will order from you again. The box was open due to mishandling but no damage to the product."

Great leather for projects or practice

"I really like the veg tan split bundles. You get a lot of great leather for a low price. The leather generally comes in a couple of different weights in the bundle. I have used it for tool boxes tool belts and pouches and to prototype new patterns."

— Robbie W. (5/5)

"The bundle was huge. I can't complain at all, the must have sent me 45 ft of it. It's utility splits. Most of it is fairly clean. Fast shipping."

— Mike (5/5)

"I'm absolutely blown away by the amount of leather I got. Did not expect that much. Amazing amazing deal. Very fast shipping. I'm only gonna order from them for leather!"

— Josh (5/5)

Excellent split leather.

"The splits I got are exactly what I wanted. A decent 6 or so ounce weight in pieces large enough to be useful. Ill be making a couple of larger tote bags from these."

The description tells you what you need to know

"I feel like the description is much needed, like you are getting a bunch of discount splits. What I got was not very good quality, and it was mostly thick, probably 10oz, uneven, and damaged. But, that's what I paid for. I just wanted a bunch of sq feet to mess around with, and try out some patterns in something that wasn't paper. And for that, this stuff works great. I have tried a bunch of different stitching methods, which don't look great or turn out nice, and aren't super easy, but this is still, a fraction of the price to even get cheap oil or veg tan utility, IMO."

Great bundle

"This is a great purchase, so long as you know ahead of time what to use it for. Personally, I use it for the midsoles and stiffeners for boots I prototype, as well as mock-up practice for other projects. As the description suggests, the leather is NOT of continuous thickness. However, you CAN source parts that have enough consistent thickness that it isn't a big deal. Just know what you are buying and what this leather would be best used for."

What a deal!

"Great bundle. I’m still relatively new to this, so it was nice to get this much leather to practice on. I got some really big pieces that I could take multiple long straps (more than enough even for a plus sized belt), plus still have plenty left over. I’ve used this so far to make the straps and belts for al my practice stuff I’m making. Sand it down a little bit to get the fuzz off, use some tokonole and it looks great when finished."

More than what I expected

"I dont think ive ever ordered a bundle, surprise box, etc from other places, where I was amazed at the contents. I ordered in the hopes of getting something I could use as souls on Moccasins. I was not disappointed! Contained a full side of 5/6oz split as well as a half shoulder split and some other pieces as well. Im new to leather working and this will keep me busy for a while."

— Todd L. (5/5)

I should have listened.

"Right, well. Let me start off by saying I should have listened to the review that said "They sent me half a cow", I thought they were being dramatic and decided to buy 2. I should have listened. There is now an entire cow sitting on my sofa AND because I ordered 2, it's a stack of cows, plus about 5-6 extra pieces here and there that are still pretty large pieces. To give you an idea, I have a standard L-shaped couch and the leather stretches from one end to the other. If you're new to leather crafting or tooling, you can make this purchase with confidence. The leather is decent quality, it's got knicks but even if you trimmed those areas, the amount of leather is still beyond substantial so you can try all sorts of fun projects without remorse. They've outdone themselves with this bundle, shipping was quick, took about 5 days from processing to the arrival to South Florida. I will be buying from these guys exclusively from now on."
