Since 1881, Hermann Oak has been tanning vegetable-tanned leather in St. Louis, Missouri. Their slow, traditional tanning process produces the kind of firm, dependable leather that has made Hermann Oak a standard for tooling, stamping, belts, tack, and other hard-working leather goods.

These pre-cut Hermann Oak strips save you the trouble of cutting full sides down yourself and give you a consistent starting point for belts, guitar straps, purse handles, bag straps, tack, cuffs, and other long narrow projects. Natural strips are ready for tooling, stamping, carving, dyeing, and finishing, while the drum-dyed versions give you a finished color with the same dependable Hermann Oak body.

Strip thickness is based on our general SLC rule of thumb:

½" Strip: 4–6 oz.
¾" Strip: 5–7 oz.
1" Strip: 7–8 oz.
1¼" Strip: 8–9 oz.
1½" and Wider: 8–10 oz.

The wider the strip, the heavier we generally cut it so the finished piece has enough body for its intended use. If your project needs a different weight than our standard, reach out to us and we’ll do our best to accommodate it.

Our drum-dyed strips are typically cut from Hermann Oak Haircell leather. When Haircell is unavailable, we may substitute smooth drum-dyed Hermann Oak with similar working characteristics.
