John James Harness Needles are made for hand sewing leather through pre-punched holes. The rounded, blunt point follows the existing stitch hole instead of cutting a new path through the leather, making these a dependable choice for saddle stitching, harness repair, sheaths, holsters, belts, bags, tack, and other heavy-duty leather projects.
These needles are strong enough to handle the pulling and pressure that comes with sewing heavier leather, while the blunt point also helps reduce the chance of piercing your thread as both needles pass through the same hole during saddle stitching.
Size 0 – Small
Approx. 1.1 mm diameter. Best suited for finer hand stitching and thread around 0.8–1.0 mm. This is a good all-around choice for wallets, belts, notebook covers, bags, lighter sheaths, and other projects where you want a sturdy stitch without an oversized needle.
Size 00 – Medium
Approx. 1.3 mm diameter. Works well with heavier thread around 1.0–1.2 mm. Choose this size for saddlery, heavier belts, holsters, sheaths, tack, bags, and other projects where a more substantial thread and stitch are desired.
Size 000 – Large
Approx. 1.6 mm diameter. Designed for heavy thread around 1.2 mm and larger. This is the best choice of the three for heavy harness work, saddle repair, thick tack, heavy holsters, and other substantial leather projects with larger pre-punched holes.
The important thing is to match the needle to both your thread and the size of the stitch hole. A needle that is too large can be difficult to pull through, while one that is too small may not comfortably carry heavier thread. Your needle should pass through the existing hole without having to force it through the leather.
