Water-resistant veg tan? Yep, it’s a thing. Hermann Oak Heritage 1881 is a full-grain, 100% vegetable-tanned leather made on American steer hides, then drum-dyed and dry milled to give it a soft, pebbled grain and a much more flexible feel than most traditional veg tan.

The water resistance is built into the leather during processing rather than added as a surface topcoat. Hermann Oak uses a proprietary water-repellent milling process that helps protect both the grain and flesh from spotting and staining, so the protection runs deeper than something simply sprayed onto the surface. It is water resistant, not waterproof, but that makes it a strong choice for leather goods that may see rain, spills, or regular outdoor use.

At 5–6 oz., Heritage 1881 has enough substance for larger bags and hard-working goods while the dry-milled temper keeps it comfortable and pliable. Use it for duffel bags, backpacks, satchels, handbags, chaps, jackets, upholstery, pillows, home décor, and other projects where you want the character and strength of vegetable-tanned leather with a softer feel and added resistance to moisture.

Hermann Oak has been tanning leather in St. Louis since 1881, and Heritage 1881 is a good example of what happens when traditional vegetable tanning is combined with a more modern finishing process. You still get the full-grain character and long-term aging properties associated with Hermann Oak, but in a leather built for a wider range of everyday applications.

Please Note: Heritage 1881 is water resistant, not waterproof. Natural grain, scars, wrinkles, and other surface variation are normal in full-grain leather and are part of the character of each side.

Satisfied Customer

"I have been a customer of Springfield Leather for around four (4) years and counting. Angela and Rick have been instrumental in helping me reset the entire interior of my 52 year old Mercedes 280 C. With the Springfield Leather operation located in Missouri at times it has been challenging for me and the Springfield team, but Angela and Rick has always come through. Thank you, Greg"

Nice leather

"Not sure this is worth the price, but that may just be because I havent put it through the ringer of wet weather"

Veg-tan that's like a chrome-tan

"A veg-tan that acts and feels like a chrome-tan. Skives well, little softer temper than HO 1881 Expedition, it resists water pretty well, and has a matte finish."
