Hermann Oak A Grade is premium natural vegetable-tanned tooling leather made in St. Louis, Missouri. With its very firm temper, tight grain, and excellent working properties, this is the leather to reach for when clean tooling, crisp stamping, wet molding, and dependable structure matter.
A Grade refers to the cosmetic grade of the hide, not a different quality of tannage. Hermann Oak tans its tooling leather using the same traditional process, then grades each side according to natural markings and the amount of clean cutting area it offers. A Grade sides have very few cosmetic blemishes or holes outside the prime area, giving you better yield for projects that require larger, cleaner pieces.
Hermann Oak takes grading seriously. Their supervisors grade each side four separate times, with grading based solely on surface imperfections such as scars and brands. The greatest emphasis is placed on the bend area, followed by the shoulder and belly, helping keep grading standards consistent from side to side.
This leather takes moisture well for carving and stamping, molds with sharp definition, accepts dyes and oils, and produces beautifully burnished edges. Available in weights ranging from 2–3 oz. through 10–11 oz., it can be used for everything from wallets and small leather goods to belts, holsters, knife sheaths, cases, straps, and other structured leatherwork.
Hermann Oak has been vegetable tanning leather in St. Louis since 1881. Their traditional tanning process preserves the natural grain and produces the firm, workable leather that has made Hermann Oak a longtime standard for tooling, stamping, molding, belts, holsters, and other demanding leathercraft.
Ordering options include smaller square-foot cuts, full sides, and four-side rolls of the same weight, giving you the flexibility to buy the amount of leather that fits your project or production needs.
Please Note: A Grade does not mean flawless. Natural characteristics such as minor scars, bug bites, wrinkles, or other range markings may still be present. These sides are graded for a high percentage of clean, usable cutting area rather than complete freedom from natural markings.

"I bought a grade and it arrived with 2 good size blemishes on the finished side( 2” round)I won’t waste another $385 on a grade again"
"The best!"
"I was ordering my Hermann Oak from another supplier. They sent me a piece and of trash. The flesh side was so loose I couldn’t burnish the edges. It also had a huge wrinkled area on the face. Then, they did it again. All of the Hermann Oak I have ordered from Springfield has been exactly what I expect. I don’t need perfection,I like some character in the leather. I do expect tight grain."
"Not always the most consistent A grade, but being available by the sqft is very helpful"
"Always the best quality and price"
"Being able to buy this stuff by the square foot is huge. Thanks!!"
"I ordered Grade A 3-4oz and Grade A 5-6oz. These were not Grade A. the 3-4oz had at least 50% with bends, scratches, and cuts. I contacted customer support and got no response. On top of that it took 10 days to recieve my leather. Not a happy leathercrafter!"
"The quality of the leather was great, however the 3-4 oz was disappointing in the size. If my project would have been wider than 8” I wouldn’t have been able to use it. It might have been 1sq. Ft. If you measured down to the point. Very disappointed in the way it was cut!"
"Drove eight hours round trip from Oklahoma to pick up my needs and had an employee helping me all the way, he showed me all around and I met a lot of your employees. Never seen anything like it. I'm a customer for life. Now my one stop shop. FIVE STAR ALL THE WAY!!!! Richard Meadors, Oklahoma"
"Absolutely the best veg tan. I use it for belts, collars, holsters, everything and it turns out great."
