Heavy Veg Tan Split

When your project calls for strength, rigidity, and the unmatched workability of premium vegetable-tanned leather, Heavy Veg Tan Splits deliver exceptional performance. Cut from genuine Hermann Oak sides and split in-house, these quality leather splits offer outstanding value while retaining the characteristics that have made Hermann Oak a trusted name among leathercrafters for generations.

Because these splits are produced from full-weight Hermann Oak sides of varying thicknesses, each side will naturally vary throughout. While the majority of the usable area remains relatively consistent, thickness may fluctuate slightly, particularly around the belly, shoulder, and neck. This is a normal characteristic of natural leather and should be expected when working with full sides.

Heavy Veg Tan Splits are remarkably versatile and well suited for a wide range of leathercraft applications. They can be wet molded, formed, stamped, tooled, carved, wood burned, branded, dyed, and finished with ease, making them an excellent choice for projects that demand both durability and customization.

Their firm temper also makes them an outstanding material for structural applications, including laminated belts, bag stiffeners, wallet reinforcement, sheaths, cases, holsters, and other projects where added support and stability are essential. Whether you're creating functional leather goods or decorative pieces, these splits provide the dependable foundation serious makers appreciate.

Since availability depends entirely on the full-weight Hermann Oak sides we receive and split ourselves, Heavy Veg Tan Splits may not always be a regularly stocked item. When available, they're an excellent opportunity to work with premium Hermann Oak leather at an exceptional value.

Please Note: Because these sides are split from full-weight Hermann Oak leather, thickness will vary naturally across each hide and may be slightly lighter or heavier than the listed range. Variations are most common around the belly, shoulder, and neck, while the primary working area remains relatively uniform.

Heavy Veg Tan Split

"Very disappointed, I realize that the $30 price is ridiculously low for side of veg-tan, however I would still expect it to be within the parameters you quoted (4-6 oz 1. 6-2. 4 mm). There are fairly large areas of the hides I have that are in the 4-5 mm range. I ordered a single side and before it was unpacked I ordered 2 more sides and the thickness varied the same. I am not seeking any, nor do i want any, modification or adjustment to the purchase price. My past experience with Springfield Leathe has very good. You have asked for my review and i have given it."

Excellent value

"this product is exactly what I was looking for and came in even larger than advertised! They say it averages 16-24sqft and I was hoping to get at least the middle of that but I actually recieved 27sqft!"

Jack (5/5)

great for rough projects

"I make armor. Like, a lot of armor, think theater meets Renaissance faire. Some of the characters are rough, druidic, gnarly and this leather is perfect for the look. The hides are nice and stiff, the thickness varies but that's fine. It's cheap, so buy a few and pick and choose that parts you use for different purposes. I used an airbrush for dye and a spray on sealer. The edges were sanded with a block and smoothed with a rag that had some leftover wax on it."

Happy with my purchase

"I bought some of this about a year or so ago. Then supplies ran out. I am so happy to get more. Took me a while to learn how to work with rough out projects but I ended up really loving the results once I figured it out. My order took a bit of time to get completed but arrived a day after it shipped. Packaging was well done. Shipper roughed it up pretty good but all survived the trip. SLC are filled with fine folks if you need help and their service is next to none. This leather is very durable. Much more so that I originally thought. I have dome tool bags, scabbards and more. Even though its not top grain there are so many things you can make with it. Can be rough finished and even use tankote for a smooth finish. Thanks again for a pleasant transaction."
