Heavy Veg Tan Split

Sides will tend to run from 16 to 24 square feet.  Thickness can run from 4 to 8 oz.  Since we split these from sides of various thicknesses, the splits will not always be uniform in thickness and may range a little thinner or heavier than listed. Thickness will differ around the belly, armpits (leg pits) and neck.  Usually the bulk of the useable area will be pretty uniform though.

Excellent quality vegetable tanned splits from Hermann Oak sides. Hermann Oak is running at capacity, and they have a lot of customers besides little ol’ us! So, to help us meet our demand for Hermann Oak leather, we’re buying it in full weight… and then splitting the sides ourselves on the very same splitter Hermann Oak used to use! (We bought it from them when they got a new one!) So, we’ve got some heavy splits hanging around. This may or may not be a regular stock item, as it completely depends on availability.

In case you weren’t aware, veg splits can be wet molded and formed, stamped and tooled, wood burned and branded, dyed, finished, etc.! Can also be used as a stiffener for laminated belts, bags, wallets, and more!

Heavy Veg Tan Split

"Very disappointed, I realize that the $30 price is ridiculously low for side of veg-tan, however I would still expect it to be within the parameters you quoted (4-6 oz 1. 6-2. 4 mm). There are fairly large areas of the hides I have that are in the 4-5 mm range. I ordered a single side and before it was unpacked I ordered 2 more sides and the thickness varied the same. I am not seeking any, nor do i want any, modification or adjustment to the purchase price. My past experience with Springfield Leathe has very good. You have asked for my review and i have given it."

Excellent value

"this product is exactly what I was looking for and came in even larger than advertised! They say it averages 16-24sqft and I was hoping to get at least the middle of that but I actually recieved 27sqft!"

great for rough projects

"I make armor. Like, a lot of armor, think theater meets Renaissance faire. Some of the characters are rough, druidic, gnarly and this leather is perfect for the look. The hides are nice and stiff, the thickness varies but that's fine. It's cheap, so buy a few and pick and choose that parts you use for different purposes. I used an airbrush for dye and a spray on sealer. The edges were sanded with a block and smoothed with a rag that had some leftover wax on it."

A lotta leather

"I’m putting plans together to find use for this 20 sq feet of 6 oz leather . Great quality for the price. May try some holsters and knife sheaths."

Happy with my purchase

"I bought some of this about a year or so ago. Then supplies ran out. I am so happy to get more. Took me a while to learn how to work with rough out projects but I ended up really loving the results once I figured it out. My order took a bit of time to get completed but arrived a day after it shipped. Packaging was well done. Shipper roughed it up pretty good but all survived the trip. SLC are filled with fine folks if you need help and their service is next to none. This leather is very durable. Much more so that I originally thought. I have dome tool bags, scabbards and more. Even though its not top grain there are so many things you can make with it. Can be rough finished and even use tankote for a smooth finish. Thanks again for a pleasant transaction."

Very pleased.

"Great side for leather lining for making knife sheaths. Looking forward to using dyes and oils to get a rustic sheath look."

"Great deal for many projects ! 4 oz. to 6 oz. will be enough for many projects . All though the sides are not shiny smooth ,there's still area for tooling, dying and finishing ! Thank you"
