These heavy vegetable-tanned pieces give you the structure of thick veg tan without having to start from natural leather. They’re drum dyed for rich, even color and finished with a smooth satin surface, while still keeping the firm body that makes this kind of leather useful for serious leatherwork.

At 10–11 oz., you’ve got plenty of substance for holsters, knife sheaths, cases, tool carriers, cuffs, shorter straps, and other projects where you want the leather to hold its shape. Most pieces won’t be long enough for a full belt, but you should still be able to get useful strap lengths and smaller components out of them.

The nice part is that the leather is still toolable even though it has already been dyed. You can stamp it, carve it, add borders, initials, maker’s marks, or other details without going through the full dyeing process yourself. With that much weight and firmness, it’s also a good candidate for wet molding when you need a project to take and hold a defined shape.

You could probably even wet mold a leather bowl out of it—if you eat your spinach.
