Fiebing’s Antique Finish is a paste made to create a soft, lustrous patina on natural or tooled leather. It settles into recessed areas to emphasize carving, stamping, and embossing while leaving a lighter layer across the raised surface for a subtle two-toned effect.

Start with clean, dry leather. When the leather has already been dyed or stained, allow it to dry and set completely before applying the antique. A resist such as Fiebing’s Pro Resist may be applied first to areas where less color or stronger contrast is desired. Allow the resist to dry completely before continuing.

Apply the Antique Finish with a sponge, cloth, dauber, sheep’s wool, or brush. Work it across the surface and into carved lines, stamped impressions, and textured areas using circular motions or strokes that follow the grain. Let the paste remain on the leather for several minutes before removing the excess. A longer working time generally allows more color to remain on the surface.

Buff away the excess with a clean cloth, leaving the finish mainly in the recessed areas. This creates contrast and helps the tooling stand out. Additional coats may be applied for a deeper antique effect, but each coat should dry completely before the next application.

Fiebing’s Antique Finish works well on carved belts, wallets, notebook covers, holsters, sheaths, saddlery, leather shapes, and other tooled leather projects where added depth and an aged appearance are desired.

Please Note: Seal the dried antique with a compatible top finish, especially on projects that will receive regular handling or exposure to moisture. Always test the complete finishing process on a scrap piece before applying it to the finished project.
