Fiebing's Pro Dye

Reliable. . . but test before using

"I purchased the Mahogany and Show Brown as contrasting colors for a book cover restoration project (I had to replicate the original colors from a faded 17th century Bible cover). Both dyes applied well to light calfskin with very little excess to wipe off. However, both were significantly darker to the eye than the swatch color on the bottles. I'm glad that I tested the dye on a waste patch of leather before using. I had to experiment more than I was anticipating to get my colors right. It does the job, but it pays to test everything before using."

Black Cherry: Great Color, but not Pro Dye Results

"I really liked the color, and had a customer request to color match some shoes for a belt. I was able to use the Black Cherry to get the color match. Unfortunately, this dye did not perform like all of the other Pro Dyes that I have used from Fiebengs: it will bleed. I buffed, wiped down with damp cloth, and sealed with three coats of Resolene finish, and still the color comes up. Had to warn my customer that this may transfer to clothing, nothing much else I could do to stop it. I will not be using this for any more belts or wallets or purses, or anything that might transfer color to a customer's personal items!"
