These panels are cut from Hermann Oak’s Haircell drum-dyed leather. Haircell is a fine, uniform grain pattern pressed into the surface of the leather, giving it a lightly pebbled texture and a clean, finished appearance. The leather is also drum dyed, allowing the color to penetrate through the leather rather than simply sitting on the surface.

Even with the finished Haircell grain, this is still workable vegetable-tanned leather. It can be stamped, tooled, wet molded, and burnished, making it useful for wallets, cases, sheaths, holsters, notebook covers, cuffs, small bags, coasters, and other projects that don't require a full side. Swivel-knife carving can be more difficult than it is on natural tooling leather because of the Haircell surface, so keep that in mind when planning heavily carved designs.

Pre-cut panels are also a great way to try Hermann Oak or grab a smaller piece for a project where buying an entire side simply doesn't make sense. You get a defined piece of quality leather that's ready to head straight to the workbench.

Hermann Oak has been vegetable tanning leather in St. Louis, Missouri since 1881. Their traditional tanning methods have made Hermann Oak a longtime favorite for stamping, tooling, molding, belts, tack, and other hard-working leather projects.

Please Note: These panels are cut from genuine leather, so minor natural markings and grain variation may still be present. The Haircell finish creates a more uniform surface texture, but swivel-knife carving may be more difficult than on unfinished natural tooling leather.
