SLC is proud to offer tracing patterns from Jim Linnell, one of the most recognized teachers and artists in modern leathercraft. Jim has spent more than 50 years working with leather, perfecting his craft, studying the history behind traditional carving styles, and passing that knowledge along to leatherworkers around the world.
These pattern packs cover everything from classic Western floral carving and regional carving styles to belts, billfolds, corners, sunflowers, hearts, and more advanced embossing designs. Whether you are looking for a pattern to put directly onto a project or studying how a well-designed carving flows across the leather, there is a lot here to learn from.
Depending on the pattern pack, you may find tracing patterns, photographs of finished carvings, suggested tool lists, or impressions showing which tools were used. Those extra references are especially helpful when you are learning a new carving style because you can see not only the lines of the design, but how Jim intended the finished tooling to look.
Some of Jim’s patterns also explore the different regional traditions that shaped Western floral carving, including Texas, Arizona, California/Visalia, Northwest, Sheridan, Montana-influenced, and other styles. Studying those differences is a great way to understand why flowers, leaves, scrolls, and overall pattern flow can look so different from one leatherworker or region to another.
Jim’s leatherwork has appeared on magazine and catalog covers, in galleries, and at leather shows around the world. His honors include the Al Stohlman Award for Achievement in Leathercraft, the Lifetime Achievement Award, and the Master Leather Artisan Award from the Academy of Western Artists.
These aren’t just patterns to trace. They are a chance to study the design work of someone who has spent a lifetime carving leather and teaching others how to do it.

"Great patterns so many options to use for many different project types definitely recommend"
"thought the patterns were the imprint type like others I've bought, I really didn't want a traceable pattern"
"These patterns won’t tell you what tools to use so if you’re brand new at it…. well it’ll be quite a steep learning curve. I make a few practice runs and use different tools for different effects and then pick something I prefer over the others. Once I get it down on practice scrap leather I’ll give it a try on a project. After a few projects it starts to look decent and after a few more I know which tools I prefer and I start using them a bit better. Someday I may even become good at this."
"I have not tried all of the patterns out however I did one of the belt patterns found the embossed portions to be too shallow to make an impression on the leather tried rubbing, pressing, and a mallet no luck moved on to something else"
"Used for the first time today and could o only be happier if my skill was better. You won't be disappointed in your purchase"
"Lots of different sizes of Lots of beautiful designs"
