Our Medium Grade Tooling Sides have long been one of our best-selling choices for vegetable-tanned leather. They sit just below our Top Grade Tooling Sides, giving you good, dependable tooling leather at a more economical price.
It's a relatively consistent grade that's somewhere between the top and the bottom of the pile. You may find a few holes, scars, wrinkles, or other natural marks, but usually not many. Insect damage should be minimal and is generally away from the better cutting areas of the hide. By and large, it's just pretty good leather!
Medium Grade still gives you the working qualities you expect from natural vegetable-tanned leather. It can be carved, stamped, tooled, molded, dyed, oiled, antiqued, and finished, making it a versatile choice for wallets, belts, bags, cases, notebook covers, cuffs, panels, and plenty of everyday leathercraft.
Choose the weight that best fits your project:
- 3–4 oz.: A lighter tooling weight well suited for wallets, notebook covers, smaller bags, panels, and projects where you want less bulk.
- 4–5 oz.: A versatile general-purpose weight for wallets, bags, cases, covers, and a wide range of carved or stamped projects.
- 5–6 oz.: Offers more body for heavier bags, cases, cuffs, panels, and other projects that benefit from a firmer finished piece.
If you need the cleanest surface possible, Top Grade may be the better choice. If a few natural marks don't bother you—or you can simply work around them—Medium Grade offers a lot of usable leather for the money.
Please Note: Medium Grade leather is selected with some allowable surface imperfections. Holes, scars, wrinkles, insect marks, and other natural characteristics may be present, though the better portions of the side should provide plenty of usable cutting area.
