S.B. Foot Hard Times Copper, also known as Copper Rough & Tough, is one of the tannery’s most recognizable pull-up leathers. Warm copper and orange-brown tones combine with a distressed, mottled surface that already looks broken in before you ever start the project.

This oil-tanned nubuck has no finishing pigments covering the surface, allowing the natural character of the hide and the movement of the pull-up to remain visible. As the leather bends, stretches, and gets handled, the oils shift within the fibers and create lighter highlights, darker areas, scratches, and creases that quickly build a rich patina.

At 4-5 oz. with a medium temper, it has enough body for bags, satchels, backpacks, cases, wallets, notebook covers, footwear, panels, straps, and other leather goods while remaining flexible enough to cut, fold, and sew comfortably. Scuffs and handling marks are not something this leather tries to hide—they are part of what makes Rough & Tough look better with use.

S.B. Foot tans this leather in Red Wing, Minnesota, where the tannery has been producing American leather since 1872. Hard times Copper has become especially well known through Red Wing footwear, where its durability and fast-developing patina are a big part of the appeal.
